The University of Calabar has suspended nine students for one academic session following their involvement in examination misconduct.
The university disclosed this in a statement issued by its Public Relations Unit and made available to journalists in Calabar on Monday.
According to the institution, the affected students were formally notified of the disciplinary action through letters signed by the Registrar, Dr Chukwuka Icha.
The suspension was approved by the university’s Senate after considering recommendations submitted by the institution’s Examination Misconduct Committee.
The university said the students would be out of the institution for the entire 2026/2027 academic session and are expected to return when the 2027/2028 academic session begins.
“The affected students have been suspended for the 2026/2027 academic session and are expected to resume their studies in the 2027/2028 academic session.

Five of the students affected by the disciplinary measure are from the Department of Theatre and Media Studies in the Faculty of Arts.
“The others are in the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences; Department of Geology, Faculty of Physical Sciences; Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences; and the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences,” the statement said.
The university further directed key officials and administrative units to ensure that the suspension is fully implemented.
Those directed to take note of the decision include the Acting Chief Security Officer, deans of faculties, heads of departments and other relevant university authorities.

The latest disciplinary action forms part of the university’s enforcement of its rules on examination conduct and academic integrity.
Examination misconduct remains a major concern across Nigerian tertiary institutions, with universities routinely subjecting reported cases to disciplinary procedures in line with their regulations.
At the University of Calabar, students found guilty of examination-related offences may face sanctions determined by the severity of the violation and the institution’s established disciplinary processes.
The university’s Senate, as the institution’s highest academic decision-making body, approved the latest sanctions following the recommendations of the Examination Misconduct Committee.
The nine students are therefore expected to remain away from academic activities at the university throughout the 2026/2027 session before resuming their studies in the following academic year.
